On August 23rd the new Kendrick Brothers movie hits theaters. OVERCOMER is a movie and message for the entire family.
SYNOPSIS: Life changes overnight for coach John Harrison when his high school basketball team’s state championship dreams are crushed under the weight of unexpected news. When the largest manufacturing plant in town suddenly shuts down and hundreds of families begin moving away, John must come to grips with the challenges facing his family and his team. Urged by the school’s principal to fill-in and coach a sport he doesn’t know or like, John is frustrated and questioning his worth… until he crosses paths with a student struggling with her own journey.
On the heels of WAR ROOM, COURAGEOUS, FIREPROOF, and FACING THE GIANTS, comes OVERCOMER. Here are some great themes in OVERCOMER:
- Identity – understanding who we are, what our priorities are, and how we see ourselves. What do we place value on? Often, we identify with what brings us satisfaction, success, glory, or what makes us feel valued in man’s eyes. As a Christ follower, finding our identity in Christ changes everything.
- Forgiveness – we see many moments where forgiveness crosses the characters path. The struggle to forgive is real and in OVERCOMER we see many giving and receiving forgiveness.
- Parenting / Marriage – leading the family with love, fun, discipline, and understanding are found in OVERCOMER. Sometimes good parenting is simply letting our kids see the real relationship between parents. To show that there are struggles, but the relationship is strong enough to withstand the storm.
Make plans to take your family, friends, church small group, maybe even some kids from the youth group, sports team, etc. The movie is great for students navigating life trying to figure out who they are and what they are called to be.
